This is the LONGEST place name in the US —>

Posted on: February 7, 2011

At a length of 45 letters, “Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagunamaugg” is the longest place-name in the United States.

This tongue-twisting body of water is located in central Massachusetts. The big C word is a Nipmuck Indian name which means “English knifemen and Nipmuck Indians at the boundary or neutral fishing place.” The lake’s name is SO difficult to write that many road signs, postcards, and even the welcome sign are all commonly misspelled! Many people now have surrendered and simply call it “Lake Webster” after the name of the town. This does not mean that there is not a great deal of local pride for the lake and its monstrous moniker though. Once, in 1949, the state proposed the removal of two of the lake’s 15 G’s. This inspired a local poet named Bertha A. Joslin to write a 55-line piece called “Touch not a G of our big lake!”
